At yesterday’s meeting of the Bluff Harbour Board a motion of condolence with the relatives of the late Mr H. E. Holland was carried in the customary manner.

A Westport Press Association telegram states that after a brief illness Mr Walter Atkin, aged 54, one of the proprietors of the Westport News, passed away on Wednesday evening.

Mr R. Bleakley, city inspector, who has been on an extended visit to England, returned to Invercargill by the express last evening. Mr Bleakley resumes his local duties on Monday. For family reasons involving his departure for Melbourne in a few weeks’ time, the Rev. James M. Smeeth has tendered his resignation as minister of the United Congregational Church, Dunedin.

Messrs J. Breen, A. E. Tall and S. A. Lindsay, who visited Dunedin for the purpose of attending the funeral of Albert S. A Greymouth Press Association message announces the death of Mother De Pazzi, a pioneer member of the Greymouth Sisters of Mercy. She was professed 53 years ago and was aged 75. She was a teacher here since 1884 and was a native of Tipperary, Ireland. There was a large assemblage of old mpils on the occasion of her golden jubilee when high tributes were paid to her ability as a teacher and moulder of character.

On Sunday, October 22, there was a large and representative gathering at Bragg’s Bay to attend the funeral of the late Mr John Bragg (Kaiporohu). After a short but impressive service conducted by the Rev. J. N. Goodman, assisted by the Rev. J. T. Bate, at the home of Mr R. Bragg, the long cortege moved off to the burial ground situated on the southern head of Bragg’s Bay. The coffin was draped with a beautiful Maori mat made of leathers. The pallbearers were Messrs T. Bragg, R. Bragg, G. Bragg and John Bragg, sons, and Messrs V. Bragg and Rodney Bragg, grandsons of the deceased. — Correspondent. The Rev. W. H. Roberts, vicar of Holy Trinity Church, Port Chalmers, died early yesterday morning, aged 58 years. Although not in robust health, he had been attending to his duties, and indeed, on Wednesday afternoon, he was present at the tennis matches. His death was unexpected. Mr Roberts was highly esteemed at Port Chalmers, and took an active part in local affairs, being chairman of the Progressive League and chairman of the Unemployment Committee. Born in England, he came out to the North Island as a young clergyman. Prior to his appointment at Port Chalmers, nine years ago, he was at Green Island, Caversham, Bluff, and North East Valley, and was on active service in the war period. One daughter is married in London, one in America, and the youngest, who has not yet finished school, resides at Port Chalmers.

Eloquent testimony to the popularity of the late Mr Duncan Gilchrist, of Waikaka Valley, was forthcoming on Wednesday when a very large assembly, representative of all classes of the community, followed the cortege from the Waikaka Valley Church to the Gore cemetery. The funeral procession was one of the longest seen in the district. The various local authorities and farming organizations with which Mr Gilchrist had been associated were represented. The services at the church and at the graveside were conducted by the Rev. D. D. McLachlan, assisted by the Rev. M. A. Gcw at the church and by the Rev. F. M. Beattie at the cemetery. The pall-bearers at the church were Messrs J. McPhail, sen , A. R. Johnston, Hugh Smith, H. P. McIntyre, J. Howden and J. E. White, while the pall-bearers from the hearse to the graveside were Messrs Adam Nichol, Henry Smith, J. Harvey, J. O. McPhail, Stanley Morrison and W. Chittock.
