MONTHLY MEETING RETURNS FOR SEPTEMBER. The monthly meeting of the Bluff Harbour Board was held at Bluff yesterday. There were present: Messrs W. A. Ott (chairman), C. S. Longuet, J. A. Hamilton, M. Hyndman, W. Hinchey, P. Reid, A. H. Aitken, T. F. Doyle, W. J. A. McGregor and G. Wraytt. The Bluff Borough Council applied for a two-inch connection on the board’s water main at the junction of Slaney street and Boyd street to supply water to the Fletcher Construction Company at the granite works. The chairman’s action in granting permission was approved, the usual conditions ot apply. The Department of Internal Affairs advised that technical officers of the department would inspect the engines in the m.v. Southland on or about November 15. An application from Mr W. Burtenshaw for permission to erect a slipway for a launch on a small island east of Ocean Beach was granted during the pleasure of the board. The Department of Internal Affairs wrote regarding land reclaimed under the Bluff Harbour Reclamation and Leasing and Empowering Act. It stated that the area no.w reclaimed would not be included in the borough until such time as the five acres authorized was reclaimed. It was decided to advise the Southland League that the board favoured a half-yearly conference of delegates of Southland local bodies and progressive leagues. The chairman was left to forward any remits on behalf of the board. The secretary of the Invercargill Chamber of Commerce wrote as follows: “I have been directed by the council of this chamber to thank your board for its generous donation of £3 3/- to its funds. Your action in this respect is very much appreciated. It is a pleasure for the president and the council members of the chamber to work in co-operation with your board and anything that can be done to further the interests of the port of Bluff will be a pleasure to the chamber at any time.” Secretary’s Report. The secretary reporting on the finances of the board and the operations of the port for the month of September stated:— The figures tabulated hereunder show under definite headings the receipts for the month of September, 1933, and for September in the preceding year:—

The principal lines imported were: Coal, 539 tons; fruit, 81; artificial manures, 193; motor spirit, 806; seeds, 38; sugar, 403; general cargo, 3372; total, 5432. The exports consisted of:—Fish, 43 tons; hemp, 117; frozen meat, 335; milk products, 209; oats and oat products, 534; potatoes, 83; rabbits (frozen), 267; seeds, 54; timber, 412; wheat, 85; wool, 287; general cargo, 637; total, 3063. Harbourmaster’s Report. The acting-harbourmaster reported on the arrivals and departures during September as follows:— Inwards: Three overseas vessels of 23,378 tons; 6 intercolonial vessels of 7910 net tons; 26 coastal vessels of 8541 net tons; total, 35 vessels of 39,829 net tons. Outwards: Two overseas vessels of 15,755 net tons; 6 intercolonial vessels of 7910 net tons; 23 coastal vessels of 8504 net tons; total, 31 vessels of 32,169 net tons. These figures compared with the corresponding month of 1932 show a decrease inwards of two vessels and 5324 tons and a decrease outwards of six vessels and 10,375 tons.
