PUKERAU NOTES

CRICKET CLUB. (From Our Correspondent.) The annual meeting of the local cricket club was held on Monday evening, of last week, Mr F. Mcßride presided. The report presented by the secretary, Mr F. Edwards, stated that the past season had been favourable for cricket from a climatic point of view, but although the team had met with more reverses than successes in the competition fixtures, the games had been thoroughly enjoyed. The thanks of members were extended to the ladies for their hospitality in providing afternoon teas, and to Mr J. Cummings who acted as scorer for the team in all the matches played. The congratulations of members are extended to the Celtic A team on winning the premiership of the Eastern Districts. The balance-sheet showed a debt of £4 19/1. The election of office-bearers for the ensuing year resulted as follows: President, Mr J. Pullar; vice-presidents, Messrs J. Cummings, G. Gordon, R. Haggart, G. Styles, R. Pullar, G. Scott, J. A. It was agreed to enter a team in the Eastern District’s senior competition, which commences on Saturday when the local team will meet Celtic on the Pukerau ground. The Pukerau Angling Club held a fishing competition on the Waipahi river on Friday last which drew 15 entries. Heavy rain fell for some hours during the morning, which caused a fresh in the river during the afternoon. Some good catches were, however, obtained. Mr Gordon Treesler, who secured 24 fish weighing 251 b 9oz annexed first prize, and Mr F. Sizemore with a handicap of 15 per cent, off, came second with 17 fish of a gross weight of 211 b soz. This was a nice bag of fish, three of them aggregating 81b in weight. Third prize went to Mr Beccard with 16 fish weighing 151 b soz. Others to weigh-in were: B. Voight, 15 per cent, off, 25 fish, 131 b 30z.; C. Charles, 10 fish, 111 b.; H. Mason, 33 1-3 per cent, off, 20 fish, 91b 8oz.; T. Speden 7J per cent, off, 12 fish, 81b 20z.; G. Taylor 7£ per cent, off, 5 fish, 51b lloz.; J. Murray, 3 fish, 41b loz. On Friday evening last a very successful entertainment was given under the auspices of the Women’s Institute in the Pukerau Hall. The president, Mrs E. Hoare, occupied the chair and extended a welcome to the large audience present. The following concert programme was submitted: Choruses by a local group of young people; solos by Misses Hopkins and N. Turnbull (Gore), Miss Maslin, Messrs L. McKenzie and S. Edwards; play, “Packing Up,” in which the characters were portrayed by Mesdames Hoare and Haggart; play, “Five Birds in a Cage,” staged by Misses Carter and McKenzie and Messrs F. Mcßride jun., L. McKenzie and E. Valentine. After the serving of supper, a very pleasant few hours’ dancing -was indulged in to music supplied by Messrs Valentine, Hoare, Young, Brown and Allan. The wintry weather experienced during last week-end, was followed by a severe frost on Monday morning, with the result that kitchen and flower gardens suffered severely. It is also feared that fruit trees are similarly effected. Paddock lambing is now mostly finished and where docking operations are completed, the returns are very satisfactory. In the Kaiwera and Otaraia districts where the lambing is later, last week’s wintry weather came at a very inopportune time for some flockowners and some losses of young lambs resulted.
