ANNUAL MEETING

APARIMA ANGLERS’ CLUB. (From Our Correspondent.) The annual general meeting of the Aparima Anglers’ Club was held on Wednesday evening, Mr G. R. Bemdtson presiding in the absence of the president over a representative at tendance. The annual report stated: A review of the past season usually reveals that it has failed in some manner in coming up to the expectations expressed at the opening, and last angling season was no exception to the rule, for though the conditions at the beginning of the season were excellent a long spell after New Year made conditions almost impossible for any but fly fishing in the local river, while the two latter months of the season were very wet and cold and did not offer much inducement to go out. Two competitions only were held, and it is significant and pleasing to note that out of the four prize-win-ners three are winners of angling trophies for the first time. The club was represented by a team in the president’s competition, and though the team had little success, an enjoyable day was spent in competiion with teams from other Southland clubs. A team of four was required for the competition yet, despite the efforts of the committee, only three members were found willing to represent the club. During the season a grant was received from the Acclimatization Society for the purpose of eel destruction. A competition was arranged over a specified time, open to anyone in the district, club members or not, and prizes were allotted for the largest number of eels destroyed without response. The competition for the open week-end competition for the Acclimatization' Society’s trophy was won by Mr T. Molloy, who is to be congratulated on his first win in a club competition. Mr J. Martin was second and Mr H. Henderson third, b;jth fishing the Aparima at Ringway. The fly fishing competition for Mr S. L. McNeil’s cup was limited to the Aparima River. The conditions proved difficult as the day was very bright and clear without a breeze. Mr Henderson obtained first place with a bag of seven fish, including a rainbow. Mr T. R. Abercrombie was second, and obtained the best fish of the day, one of 3 jib, and Mr D. C. Robertson was third. We tender oui sincere thanks to the donors of the prizes for the two competitions. To Mr McNeil for the cup presented by him for the fly fishing contest, and to the Southland Acclimatization Society for the trophy for the open competition.

The balance-sheet showed a credit balance of £l4 15/-. In moving the adoption of the report and balance-sheet, the chairman said the society was in a satisfactory condition from a financial point of view. He congratulated the officials on the excellence of their work, paying a tribute to the services of the secretary, Mr H. Henderson. Mr D. C. Robertson seconded the motion, which was carried. The election of office-bearers resulted as follows: President, Mr L. W. Petchell; vice-presidents, Messrs R. Fleck, Jno. Forsyth, G. R. Bemdtson; committee, Messrs J. Martin, D. C. Robertson, M. Maley, R. Dickson, T. R. Abercrombie; secretary and treasurer Mr H. Henderson; auditor, Mr T. R. Abercrombie. After the general business had been completed, a social hour was held, and a number of toasts duly honoured. During an interval musical and other items were contributed by Messrs H. E. Philp, G. R. Berndtson, S. L. McNeil and Nelson (Invercargill).
