Goldmining at Waimumu. Years ago the flats at Waimumu were worked successfully for gold with a dredge, but the terraces were left untouched as there were then no satisfactory means of working them. In a few months, however, the area will again present a scene of activity, for a company is being floated to work the terraces with power-driven pumps.

Oreti River Bridge at Winton. Work on the reconstruction of the Oreti river bridge at Winton commenced on Monday, and in conversation with the Winton representative of the Southland Times yesterday Mr W. M. Norman, county member for the Winton riding, stated that the bridge would be closed for only one day, and ample notice would be given ,of this. Mr Norman said he had visited the work on Monday, and while the contractors had intended closing the bridge to-morrow it had been arranged at a little extra cost to keep the bridge open. Only on the day that the con-necting-up work was being carried out would the bridge be closed, and in the meantime a temporary run-down on to the bridge would be provided for the use of all traffic. Approaching from the Oreti side, it was explained, the bridge would be in use for a certain way, and the run-down would be on to the beach, on the east side of the bridge, with the exit at the gate leading to the main road to Winton. Traffic going Oreti way would enter at this gate, and the run-down would provide the approach to the bridge. It was originally intended to close the bridge, but the decision to keep it open will be appreciated, especially by those whose work comprises the cartage of milk to the Awarua dairy factory, as the closing of the bridge would necessitate them making a considerable detour.
