DESPERADO ESCAPES

TOOK THE SHERIFF WITH HIM. Dallas (Texas), September 6. Harvey Bailey, America’s most noteworthy desperado, escaped from prison here to-day—and took the sheriff with him! The prisoner escaped in the sheriff’s car, and tore across country in true Wild West style, until three hours later he was recaptured without bloodshed. A confederate must have smuggled a revolver into the gaol, for Bailey suddenly appeared to the gaoler’s office brandishing a gun and swearing that he meant business. Forcing officials to march ahead, he directed the sheriff, Tresp, into the latter’s motor car. Then, taking the driver’s seat himself, he handcuffed Tresp to him and started headlong for open country. Near Ardmore (Oklahoma), the police overhauled Bailey while he was replenishing his supply of petrol. He got away again, but officers surrounded him after a 70-mile-an-hour race through Ardmore streets. Bailey is accused of participation in the Kansas City Union Station massacre, and of the kidnapping of Charles Urschel, the Oklahoma millionaire oil magnate.
