WINTON NOTES

GOLF CLUB. PRESENTATION OF TROPHIES. (From Our Correspondent.) The 1933 season of the Winton Golf Club was officially closed on Wednesday evening last, when the annual social function was held in the Masonic Hall, there being a large attendance of members and friends present. A happy evening was spent by all, dancing being the principal part of the evening entertainment, the music for which waS| supplied by Miss Maisie McKenzie, while Miss Moana Melton contributed extras. Vocal items and stories were given by Mr George Lindsay. The presentation of trophies won during the recent season was made by the president, Dr. P. Gow, after the supper interval. He referred to the happy position in which he was placed in presenting such handsome trophies in recognition of performances on the local links. Members appreciated the fact that their golf was only made possible by the generosity of Mr and Mrs J. R. Hamilton, patron and patroness of the club respectively, who placed their property at the disposal of the club free of charge. The various trophies won during the season were presented, Dr. Gow congratulating the successful players and making special mention of the success of Mr and Mrs W. G. Clark, jun., who had during the recent season annexed the men’s arid the ladies’ championships respectively. Once before in the history of the club husband• and wife had won both titles during the one season. Mr and Mrs G. Davis, now residents of Rangiora, had gained that distinction while at Winton. Mrs Clark was the only officially recognized A grade player in the club, while Mr Clark, a member of only three years’ standing, had made a name for himself in local golf, and the speaker thought it would not be long before he figured prominently in Southland golf. The Hamilton Cup was presented to Mr Clark by Mrs J. R. Hamilton, who warmly congratulated him on his success.

The prize-list was as follows:— Ladies: — Champion (president’s trophy), Mrs W. G. Clark, jun.; runnerup (club trophy), Mrs J. Raymond; L.G.U, silver medal, Mrs Clark; L.G.U. bronze medal, Miss M. Martin; L.G.U. monthly medals, Mrs O. A. B. Smith, Mrs Clark (2), Miss Martin and Mrs J. Raymond; Mr T. Walker's trophy (A division) two bogey matches, Mrs Lindsay; Mrs Smith’s trophy (B Division) two medal matches, Mrs M. Reilly; eclectic matches, Mrs Clark and Miss I. Shand; sealed hole matches, Mrs Clark (2) and Mrs J. B. Cowie; flag matches, Mrs Lindsay and Miss M. Stewart; one club match, Miss B. Moore; hidden partner match, Mrs Cowie and Mrs J. Kilby; combined matches, hidden partner match, Mrs Clark and A. McCurdy; mixed foursomes, Miss I. Shand and W. G. Clark.

Men.—Champion (president’s trophy) W. G. Clark, jun.; runner-up (club trophy), O. A. B. Smith; Hamilton Cup, W. G. Clark; medal round, W. G. Girl Guides. At the seventh annual meeting of the committee of the Winton Girl Guides Company the Commissioner, Dr. M. Gow, presided over the following members: Mesdames H. Liddell, O. A. B. Smith, J. A, Cushen, W. Hamilton, C. M. Lindsay, J. R. Hamilton, J. P. McWilliam, R. M. Gilmour, Misses B. Kidd, J. Ross and I. G. Russell (secretary).

In moving the adoption of the annual report and balance-sheet (previously published), Dr. Gow, took the opportunity of thanking the members of the committee for their co-operation during the year, the officers for their loyal support and the secretary, Miss Russell, for her valuable assistance. On the motion of Mrs J. R. Hamilton a vote of thanks was carried to Dr. Gow and appreciation expressed of her work in the interests of the company and Guiding generally. The election of office-bearers for the ensuing year resulted as follows:— Vice-presidents, Mesdames J. Brown, R. M. Gilmour, J. R. Hamilton and J. P. McWilliam; secretary and treasurer, Miss I. G. Russell; auditor, Mr D. Wildey; committee, Mesdames J. A. Cushen, M. Driscoll, W. Hamilton, H. Liddell, C. M. Lindsay, T. A. McWilliam, P. A. de la Perrelle, O. A. B. Smith, Misses B. Kidd and J. Ross.

At a general meeting of the committee. a letter was received from the Guide Company thanking the committee for its assistance during the year and enclosing a donation towards its funds.

The membership fee of 5/- was retained.
