LUMSDEN NOTES

TENNIS CLUB. (From Our Correspondent). Tire annual meeting of the Lumsden Tennis Club was held in .Johnson s hall on Wednesday, September 19, when Mr V/. Johnson presided over a fair attendance. The president complimented the club on its financial position, having commenced the season with a deficit of £l3 the balance sheet now shows a credit of 7/2. This satisfactory position is no doubt due to the energies of the secretary, Mr G. Clark who carried out his secretarial duties to the letter. Lumsden had not won the Northern District competition but congratulated the winners. Although there was a large membership it was always difficult to get a team to travel to the matches. There are quite a number of very promising players among the juniors and it is hoped that the travelling will be easier during the forthcoming season. Mr Johnson thanked the secretary and all members for the services rendered to the club last season.

The following officials were appointed for the ensuing season: President, Mr N. Johnson; secretary, Mr G. Clark; vice-presidents, Miss Adamson, Mrs Ogilvy, Dr Brown; committee, Messrs W. Small, R. Stewart, J. Ogilvy, E. Ashley, Misses Sherriff (2), Graham, Isaacs, Mesdames Biggar and Charleson; delegates to Mesdames McDonald and Biggar; Ladder Committee, Dr Brown, secretary and captain. Subscriptions for the season were fixed at men 15/-, ladies 10/-, junior members up to age of 16, 2/6. Miss Tobin who has been the guest of Mrs E. Wilson, the vicarage gave a most interesting address on the Chinese mission at the meeting of the ladies’ guild on Thursday last. Her descriptions of work in China and tales of experiences during her six weeks’ captivity among the bandits were most affecting. At the conclusion of the address the Rev. G. D. Wilson thanked Miss Tobin and assured her of local support. Mrs McAnnelly, Winton has been spending a few days with Mrs T. Ibbotson. Mr and Mrs A. Patterson have returned from a holiday spent in Christchurch and Dunedin. Miss M. Allen, of the local hospital, who has been on a six weeks’ furlough at Rarotonga and Cook Islands, resumed duties on Saturday. On Wednesday Misses Rowe and Robins of the extension of the Home Science Department gave a very interesting demonstration on fittings and furnishings. Mrs A. Allen, in the absence of Mrs G. Hamilton, on behalf of those present thanked Misses Rowe and Robins for the thorough manner in which they gave the demonstration.
