GORE CITIZENS’ CLUB, ANNUAL REPORT. The annual report of the Gore Citizens’ Tennis Club for the year 1932-33 states:— We were rmsuccessful in the club competitions, but nevertheless had a number of close and enjoyable matches in both the A and B grades during the season. We extend our hearty congratulations to the Gore Club as the holder of the Aitken Shield and the Edendale Club as winner of the B grade competition. We were successful in retaining the McCorkindale Cup after several particularly close matches in the final against the Gore Club. The club was represented in all the representative matches played by the district team, the following players participating: Misses K. Jopp and N. Paterson and Messrs D. M. McLeod, A. Maude and D. S. McLeod; the lastnamed also gained a place in the Southland team in the inter-provincial matches. A number of club members entered for the Roxburgh tournament and met with considerable success. Misses L. and K. Jopp won the ladies’ doubles and Mr D. S. McLeod was a finalist in both the doubles and singles. This player was successful in retaining the Galloway Cup at Invercargill. On Labour Day the club conducted an open tournament, which was well supported by district players. We have to thank the Gore Bowling Club for its kindness in allowing us the use of its pavilion during the day. The depleted membership of the club, with a corresponding falling off in revenue, is causing the committee some concern. The assistance of present members is sought to endeavour to add to our numbers, as with three courts available another 12 members would still leave us with a comparatively low membership. We commenced the season with a credit balance of £1 14/9 and at the expiration of the year we have in hand £1 18/2. After finding the usual expenses,' which include a considerable sum for nets, etc., we were obliged to find £5 on account of arrears of rent due to the Gore Borough Council. A satisfactory arrangement has now been made regarding these arrears, and in future our rent will be £1 per annum instead of £3 10/- as heretofore. We have to thank the ladies, and particularly their secretary and assistant secretary, for the capable manner in which they have dispensed afternoon tea during the season.
