GORE RIFLE CLUB

SUCCESSFUL SOCIAL. PRESENTATION OF PRIZES. The annual social and presentation of prizes of the Gore Defence Rifle Club was held on Tuesday night when there was a large attendance of members and supporters presided over by the president (Mr C. M. Wilson). The chairman extended a hearty welcome to the members and visitors and referred to the splendid progress made by the club since its resuscitation three years ago. The McNab range was a splendid asset and a credit to the club. The last year had been very successful, but it had had one unfortunate aspect in that the late president, Mr J. Mathews, who had fathered the club, had left the district. The prizes won during the season were then presented by the patron of the club, Mr R. B. Bannerman, the prize-list being as follows:—Para Rubber Coy.’s trophy, Rfim. I. Greenfield; Murray and Robertson’s trophy, Vicepres. S. Preece; Mr W. Cunningham’s Christmas lamb, Vice-pres. S. Preece; Mrs Greenfield's gold star, Rflm. B. Cochrane; first aggregate, Pres. C. M. Wilson’s trophy, Rflm. I. Greenfield; Messrs Gregg and Co.’s trophy, Rflm. P. Hay; Messrs Hay Bros.’ trophy, Pres. C. M. Wilson; Mr G. Bain’s trophy, Rflm. Geo. Young; Mr C. France’s trophy, Vice-pres. Geo. Bain; Mr S. Preece’s trophy, Rflm. W. Cunningham; second aggregate, Mr J. Mathews’ trophy, Rflm. P. Hay; Preece Cup, first and second aggregates, Vice-pres. Geo. Bain; Miniature of Preece Cup, Rflm. G. Hay; Mr D. S. McLeod’s shield, Rflm. W. Cunningham; Mrs J. Mathews’ trophy, class firing, Pres. Milne; fourth in club championship, Pres. C. M. Wilson. Spoon winners were: Vice-pres. Geo. Bain, six; Vice-pres. S. Preece, five; Rflm. I. Greenfield, four; Pres. C. M. Wilson, four; Vice-pres. C. France, three; Rflm. B. Cochrane, three; Rflm. P. Hay, three; Rflm. H. Mason, two; Rflm. W. Cunningham, two; Rflm. A. Hay, two; Mr J. Mathews, two; Rflm. G. Hay, two; Rflm. Geo. Young, two; Rflm. W. Milne, one; Rflm. H. Richardson, one; Rflm. A. Williamson, one. Mr Bannerman congratulated the prize winners on their success and offered his hearty congratulations to Rifleman W. Milne on winning the Southland Championship, he being the first Gore winner since 1913 when the trophy had been won by Rifleman J. A. Wright. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded to the donors of prizes. During the evening talks on shooting in the earlier years at Gore were given by Messrs J. Greenfield and John McCartney, veteran members of the club.
