A SUDDEN ATTACK

RAILWAY CLERK SHOT.

■ (Extraordinary.) (Per United Press Association.)

Christchurch, July 23.

Answering a light knock, Leonard Arthur Lee, shift clerk on duty at the Addington railway station, pushed up the slide of the ticket office window at 6.45 to-night and found himself covered by a rifle held by a masked man. Without speaking a word the man fired and as Lee staggered back with a bullet wound through his chin, his assailant ran off into the darkness of the deserted station.

Lee is now in hospital. His condition is not grave. There may be difficulty in extracting the bullet which lodged in his throat. There is apparently no motive for the attack. No attempt was made at robbery, though silver coins lay within easy reach at the window. Lee is aged 35 and is not known to have any personal enemies.
