PLOUGHING MATCH
SUCCESSFUL FIXTURE. FINANCES BALANCED. A meeting of the Southland Champion Ploughing Match Association was held yesterday morning when the president, Mr A. S. McNaught, presided over an attendance of Messrs J. Ronald, R. Gray, W. L. Gray, J. J. Blakie, J. Young, A. C. Gray, L. J. Ronald, G. Gray and J. Gray. A financial statement presented by the secretary showed receipts of over £6O with about £l7 10/- to come in, the expenditure practically even. Considering the times the position was very satisfactory, the president said. The fixture would pay its way and that was almost more than could have been expected. The association had a reserve, so members could congratulate themselves on the position. The report was adopted. The question of allocating the MacKinnon Trust medal came before the meeting and the president suggested that it should go to the best team of horses. Mr James Ronald moved and Mr Blaikie seconded that it should be awarded to the best team on the grounds and the secretary was instructed to have it inscribed accordingly. When the passing of payment of prizes was considered a member suggested that the prize money in class
B should be reduced in future, but other members opposed that view on the grounds that a reduction would mean a very small saving and might restrict entries. The president thanked members for the way they had worked to make the match a success. Motions of appreciation to Mr J. M. Fowler, for the use of his paddock for a football field, to Mr Walter Blaikie, for the use of the ploughing field, and to the caterer were carried.
