POULTRY SHOW

THE GORE FIXTURE A SPLENDID DISPLAY INCREASED ENTRIES Increased entries compared with the previous year with keen competition in all the principal sections ensured the success of the Gore Poultry Club’s sixth annual show which commenced at the Town Hall yesterday. The judges were enthusiastic concerning the birds exhibited and the show was classed as being well up to the standard of the principal poultry exhibitions in the South Island. Several South Island championships allotted to the show attracted entries from poultry breeders very far afield, exhibitors having forwarded entries from Christchurch and intermediate centres. There was an excellent representation of Southland fanciers, practically all districts being prominent in the prize list. The judging was completed shortly after noon and there was a fair attendance in the afternoon . when the show was opened to the public. There was a large attendance in the evening and it is expected that public support to-day and this evening will be large. The club was entitled to be satisfied with its management of the fixture. The president, Mr R. Drysdale, headed an energetic committee and other prominent officials were the secretary, Mr S. O. Cuttriss, and the treasurer, Mr G. Wallace. The judge of the poultry section (Mr John Baxter) said that the open classes had been of much similar standard as in previous years with nothing of outstanding quality. There was a tendency for some of the birds to be ratnei large and these would have been more suitable for the utility classes. The Golden Wyandotte class was very fine. The utility section were much better than the open. The White Leghorns were a feature of the show and were fit to hold their own anywhere. Minorcas and Black Orpingtons were also very good. White and Buff Orpington were the finest seen outside Christchurch this season. Brown Leghorns also made a great display. There was a good number of entries in ducks and the birds were well up to standard. Bantams were judged by Mr P. G. Lindsay, who said that they made an excellent show. There were good entries of good quality birds and competition was keen. The birds were all in tip-top condition. Pigeons were also a fine section although competition in the fancy classes was not keen. The Eastern District classes attracted very good entries and the judge, Mr R. Mitchell, had a difficult task in allotting the awards. Many of the birds shown in this section would not have been out of place in open competition and the section was a fitting display of the birds owned by Eastern fanciers. The prize list was as follows:— OPEN CLASSES. (Judge, Mr John Baxter, Seaward Downs). Old English Game, black red. Hen, J. Clapp (Nightcaps) 1 and 2. Old English game, duckwing. Hen, J. Clapp 1.
