BAND CONTEST

INVERCARGILL DISTRICT.

ARRANGEMENTS FINALIZED.

At the meeting of the Invercargill District Band Contest Committee all arrangements for the conducting of the contests were finalized. Mr J. S. Brass (chairman) presided and welcomed Mr J. G. Osborne, secretary of the New Zealand Brass Bands Association, who was present by invitation and outlined details in connection with the contest. Mr Osborne will return to Invercargill ten days before the contest and assist in its organization. Owing to the proposed date, October 28, being in the Labour Day week, the committee, after consideration, decided to alter the date and the contest will now definitely be held on Saturday, November 4. No charge will be made for entry. Following is the prize list:—Brass Bands—Selection: (1) B, £25; C, £l5; (2) B, £l5; C, £10; (3) B, £5; C, £5. Quickstep: (1) £2O; (2) £10; (3) £5. Pipe Bands—Quickstep: First, £2O; second, £10; third, £5. It is proposed that a fair percentage of the net profits be divided between all competing brass bands in proportion to the distance of travel and reasonable expenses incurred by each band. Entries will close with the secretary, Box 313, Invercargill, on Saturday, August 12. The music for the test and quickstep will be own choice. The appointment of Mr Thomas Goodall, of Wellington, as adjudicator was advised by the New Zealand Brass Bands Association. Arrangements for the appointment of military judges for the quickstep will be in the hands of .Major McHugh, N.Z.S.C. Mr A. G. Homer, of Dunedin, has been requested to act as supervisor subject to the confirmation of the association. Mr Homer has had considerable experience of contest work. It is necessary that all competing bands be affiliated with the-New Zealand Brass Bands Association. All. information as to fees, etc., will be given by Mr J. G. Osborne, secretary to the association, Wellington. The matter of cheap fares has been taken up with the Railway Department. The work of the committee is well ahead and with the assistance of the bands the success of the contest is assured.
