BALFOUR NOTES

EUCHRE TOURNEY. (From Our Correspondent.) To augment funds for the purpose of making a presentation to Mr and Mrs James Liddell, who have left the district a progressive euchre tourney was held in the hall on Wednesday evening. There was a fair attendance of players and first prizes were won by Mrs Hood and Mr J. Muir, Mrs Wilson and Mr J. Davis winning the consolation prizes. School Sports.

On Friday afternoon the Riversdale School football and hockey teams visited Balfour and tried conclusions with the local representatives. The hockey match was closely contested, Balfour finally winning by three goals to two. Miss A. McMath was referee.

The local boys proved too good for the visitors at football, winning by 11 points to five points. L. Matheson (2) and Roy scored for Balfour, W. Stewart converting one try. For Riversdale Denniston scored and converted, after being run into position by O’Connor, who played a clever game right throughout, and was easily the pick oi the visitors. Mr McMath was referee. Second Grade Football.

The Waikaia and Balfour junior fifteens met at Balfour on Saturday afternoon. The local team had slightly the better of the game, winning by 17 points to 11. The points for the winners were scored by P. Scott, D. Dillon and W. Greer, one try each, and J. Hoffman two tries. Scott converted one try. A. McDonald scored two tries for Waikaia, one of which was converted by E. Sanson, who also kicked a penalty goal. Mr L. Guyton controlled the game. Ladies’ Hockey. The local ladies’ hockey team, entered in the seven-a-side hockey tourney at Dipton on Saturday, gave a good account of itself, defeating Union by three goals to nil in the final round and going under to Hokonui, in the second round, by a hit behind the line after full-time and extra spells had been played. Hokonui eventually emerged victorious. Valedictory.

Priori to his departure from the district where he has been farming for a number of years, Mr W. T. Poppelwell was farewelled by neighbours and friends at the home of Mr and Mrs B. W. Hurley, Cattle Flat. Progressive euchre was played, Mrs McKay and Mr J. R. Keown securing first prizes, consolation honours going to Mrs Wilson and Mr T. McCann. Mr W. Chapman referred to the neighbourly qualities of the departing guest and asked his acceptance of a fountain pen, and for Miss Marie Poppelwell a box of handkerchiefs. Other speakers who testified to the sterling qualities of their guest were Messrs B. Hurley, R. T. Wilson, T. Manson, H. Cromie and S. Keown. Mr Poppelwell suitably replied.
