TARIFF COMMISSION
FURTHER EVIDENCE HEARD. (Per United Press Association.) Wellington, June 26. The Tariff Commission continued its sittings to-day. Mr H. L. Green, Director of the Standard Engineering Company, Ltd., urged for. a 20 per cent, duty on English importation of clips, tags and rings for identifying livestock, poultry, fish and animals, 25 per cent, on Empire, and 45 per cent, tariff on foreign. He also sought a 20 per cent, on British metal working tools, 35 on Empire and 45 on foreign. . Mr P. J. Lee, representing the Dutlne Steel Casement Co., Ltd., sought a retention of the present duty on steel windows. Mr E. H. Fountain, representing the Automatic Franking Machine Co., asked for an increase from 20 to 40 per cent, on imported franking machines, saying that his company was being undersold by British importations. Mr J. M. Thompson, managing director of Beaty Bros. (N.Z.) Ltd. asked that electric washing machines and electric irons which are at present subject to duty be admitted free. He stated that there was no duty on sewing machines and vacuum cleaners and contended that a similar privilege should be extended to electric washing machines and electric irons. His firm imported these articles from Canada. There was little competition from the United Kingdom and none from Australia. The commission adjourned until to-morrow morning.
