FASCIST CONTROL
SUPPRESSED STREET MEETINGS. LABOUR CIRCLES OBJECT. (Per United Press Association.) Christchurch, June 24. With regard to Commissioner Wohlmann’s observations on street meetings, Christchurch Labour circles oppose further restrictions. “I can sense in the Commissioner’s statement the first indication of Fascist control,” commented a Trade Union secretary. The feeling I have is that advantage is being taken of the disturbances m Auckland and Wellington last year to suppress legitimate demonstrations apd meetings. It is recognized that these demonstrations are the safety valve. It is a significant fact that in Christchurch where meetings, have been allowed there has been little or no disturbance.” . . More secret planning by a section ot the unemployed resulted in a decision to hold another demonstration in the city, probably on Monday. It is understood this week’s was not. up to the expectations of the organizers, who thought 3000 men would attend instead of the official estimate of 790.
