SALE OF POULTRY
ORDERS NOT FULFILLED. MAN SENT TO GAOL. (Per United Press Association.) Christchurch, June 14. The story of a man who set up in business in Christchurch as the Southern Poultry Distributors, Ltd., secured orders for £3OO and failed in many cases to fulfil orders for poultry was unfolded before the Magistrate, Mr Mosley, this morning. The accused, John Francis Burns, aged 29, described as a cabinetmaker, was sentenced to twelve months’ gaol. He pleaded guilty to _ seven charges affecting buyers in Kaitangata, Nelson, Reefton, Balclutha, Oamaru, Timaru and Christchurch. The police said that instead of sending pullets to a Coast buyer after accepting orders the accused forwarded old hens. He had offered through an advertisement to sell first-class poultry. Orders came from all over New Zealand. He had fulfilled some orders, but in other cases had just pocketed the money. Burns had been in trouble before for a somewhat similar case.
