PAYMENT DUE TO-DAY
WHAT WILL AMERICA DOI
REPLY ANXIOUSLY AWAITED
BRITAIN’S REPORTED OFFER
An instalment o£ Britain’s war debt to the United States is due to-day, but although feverish negotiations have been in progress between London and Washington in regard to the payment, nothing definite has yet been arranged. Mr Neville Chamberlain was to have made a statement in the House of Commons on Tuesday, but deferred doing so pending receipt of a despatch from Washington. It is believed that Britain has made an offer of partial payment, and Mr Roosevelt, according to a report from Washington, is expected to spring a surprise in his reply. It is suggested that America will accept the sum offered with the understanding that her action will not invalidate her claim to the unpaid remainder.
