CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
QUARTERLY MEETING AT GORE. The quarterly meeting of the Gore Chamber of Commerce was held last evening. Mr A. T. Newman presided over the following.—-Messrs A. A. MacGibon, G. Smith, E. C. Smith, J. Hunter, H. H. Doughty, C. R. Wilkinson, W. B. Johnston, H. E. Bacon, T. Sherborne, O. J. Howells, G. Whittingham, H. W. Pascoe, W. Scobie, W. McAra, J. J. Gresham and A. H. Aitken (secretary). Congratulations were extended to Mr Aitken on his recovery from his recent serious illness. To fill the vacancy of president caused by the departure from Gore of Mr A. J. Kerse, Mr Newman was elected president. Mr E. C. Smith was elected vice-president. The secretary of the Dunedin Chamber advised that at the last meeting of the council the following resolution, after very full discussion, was adopt-
ed:—“That the free and unrestricted entry of our exports into Great Britain is so vital to New Zealand that negotiations should be initiated to ascertain on what terms this right can be secured and we should be prepared to make concessions to achieve this end.” It was decided to take no action, the opinion being expressed that the present time was not opportune for the imposition of the quota system. Advice was received from the Associated Chambers of Commerce that the executive had considered the application from Gore to have the expenses of the official assignee paid by the Govermnent when attending meetings of creditors outside the district in which he resides. It had been decided that further expenditure by the Government could not be asked for by the association. Mr E. C. Smith said that the agitation had evidently done some good as there had been three meetings of creditors in the district recently, the assignee being in attendance at each.
