EUCHRE PARTY AND DANCE. (From Our Correspondent). In order to avoid clashing with similar functions, the usual euchre party and dance was held on Friday evening last in the Waikana School when there was a good attendance. After two hours play the winners were found in Mrs J. Henderson (ladies) and Mr S. Henderson (gentlemen). After supper the room was cleared for dancing to music by Mr lan Haggitt (violin) and Mr David McDonald (accordeon). Personal. Captain Packer of Dunedin and Lieut. Lomas of Balclutha, who have been appointed to succeed Captain Baker at the local Salvation Army have arrived and assumed their new duties. Mrs A. N. Mac Gibbon who has been on an extended holiday in the North Island visiting relatives returned to Mataura by Saturday evening’s express. Orchestral Society. The Mataura Orchestral Society opened its 1933 season on Friday evening in the Horticultural Hall before a good audience who were not slow to show their keen appreciation of the programme presented. It became apparent early in the programme that hard and continued practice had been put into the pieces and great credit is due to the conductor, Mr O. E. Hubener upon the artistic interpretations of the works of the several composers. The soloists for the evening were Mrs O. Hubener and Mr A. J Jones, both well known to local audiences, and it was not surprising therefore that their efforts met with such recognition. The accompanists were Miss E. Duncan and Mr S. Bringans, while the orchestra was augmented by several' players from Gore who have given their services readily toward the success of the society and to whom the society is deeply indebted. The leader of the orchestra is Miss M. Baker, a local violinist of considerable promise. Following is the programme: Overture “Jolly Robbers” (Suppe), “Carmen” (Bizet); Zampa (Harold); Merry Widow (Lhor) and Tales of Vienna Woods (Strauss); the vocal numbers being “Should he Upbraid” (Bishop), and “Whistle and I’ll Come tae ye Ma Lad” by Mrs O. E. Hubener and “I Am Fate,” and “Bid Me To Love,” by Mr A. J. Jones.
