:» - SUTEM CNI by New Zealand (haw' Comprising COMMONWEALTH @ DOMINION LINE, LTD. i THE NEW ZEALAND SHIPPING CO. LTD. 4/ SHAW SAVILL ® ALBION COMPANY. LTD. , REFERRING to the Blue Star Line’s advertisement which appeared on 7th June, it should be known that this Line is controlled by Vestey Bros. We are sure Exporters and Importers will not be deluded into believing that this propaganda is entered into for their benefit. These Press notices were only issued by that Line after they approached us for a 10% share in the New Zealand trade and had been refused. Firstly— lt was so refused because the undersigned Lines do not see why they should be expected to give up a share of the trade which they have built up and developed, neither do they see why they should be expected to lay up ships that have been built at great expense to meet the requirements of the trade, in order that Blue Star Line vessels should take their place. Secondly— The Producers of New Zealand insisted, as a condition of the Contracts, on the Shipping Companies undertaking to refrain from entering into any competition with Merchants. This the Lines had no difficulty in accepting, as they firmly disapprove on principle of competitive Merchants being interested in the carrying trade as Shipowners, as by that means the Shipowners would be in a position so to adjust their freight as to undercut their competitors and obtain inside information of the business of those competitors who ship by their vessels. The Blue Star Line and Vestey Bros, combine the roles of Producers, Owners of Freezing Works, Owners of Cold Storage in England, Salesmen, and Distributors, with that of Shipowners and Carriers, which is entirely contrary to the general understanding between Shipowners and Shippers. Prior to the Ottawa Conference, Sir Edmund Vestey issued pamphlets to all members of the English House of Parliament depreciating the efforts that were to be made at Ottawa for the development of Empire trade. We propose to publish from time to time extracts from these pamphlets, and the following is taken from Sir Edmund Vestey’s Pamphlet entitled “ Britain’s Economic Insanity.” “If there is one incontrovertible fact, it is that in view of the small purchases from us by the Dominions in comparison with our large purchases from them, THEY ARE NOT EVEN ENTITLED TO THE PREFERENTIAL FREEDOM FROM OUR TARIFFS WHICH THEY ARE ALREADY RECEIVING, let alone any question of their right to ask us to make further sacrifices at Ottawa.” Commonwealth & ©ominion Line Ltd.
