WOMAN’S DEATH
SHOCKING INJURIES STANDING ON TRAM CAR SMASHED AGAINST POLE (Per United Press Association.) Auckland, June 12. Shocking injuries to her head which proved fatal an hour later were received by Mrs Yvonne Wheadon, aged 28, when she came into violent contact with a centre pole while standing on the front step of a tramcar in Pitt street this evening. The conductor of the tramcar said that Mrs Wheadon and her two children boarded the car at Point Chevalier. When the tram reached Point Chevalier Theatre the children left the car to go to the pictures. Their mother continued the trip toward the city. “As we were coming down Pitt street, a woman who was in the front half of the tram suddenly left her seat and hurried toward the front platform,” said the conductor. “She looked over the chain on the right-hand side of the platform and stood for a moment on the step. She was immediately struck violently against a centre pole and knocked from the step on to the roadway.” Mrs Wheadon was suffering from grave head injuries and died in the hospital. She is survived by her husband and two children. Her husband left home for a camp in the country this morning. The children, who are young, are being cared for by friends.
