She returns to Bluff this morning. The Shaw Savill liner Taranaki left Timaru on Tuesday night for Bluff but ran into a south westerly gale and as a consequence did not catch yesterday afternoon’s tide. She was expected to berth about 2 o’clock this morning to begin loading 24,500 freight carcasses of mutton. 3500 crates of cheese, 500 bales of wool and 200 casks of tallow. Completion is expected on Friday and departure will then be taken for Picton.

The Union Steam Ship Company’s well-

known cargo steamer Kurow is reported sold to the Moller Line, and a Chinese crew has already arrived in Australia to take her to the East. The Kurow is a steel screw steamer o£ 2625 tons gross register, and was built by W. Doxford and Sons, Ltd.. Sunderland, in 1909. The Shaw, Savill, and Albion Company’s Waimana, which is due at Opua to-day from London, will commence loading _at that port. She will complete at Napier. Lyttelton. Port Chalmers and Wellington, and is to clear Wellington finally on May 26 for London, via Cape Horn and Montevideo.

The Oceanic Company's liner Monterey left San Francisco on May 2 and Los Angeles on May 3 for Honolulu, Pago Pago, Suva. Auckland, Sydney and Melbourne. She is due at Auckland on May 19. The Marine Department notifies mariners that the signal station at Akaroa Lighthouse has been discontinued, as telephone communication between the lighthouse and Akaroa Post Office is totally interrupted. The Marine Department advises that standard time in the territory of Western Samoa has been altered to correspond with the meridian of 165 deg. west longitude, or 11 hours slow on Greenwich mean time.

During February the Netherlands Shipbuilding Company. Amsterdam, launched the motor ship Tricolour, built for Messrs Wilh. Wilhelmsen, of Oslo. She is a twinscrew vessel, designed for carrying cargo and a limited number of passengers. Her principal dimensions are:—Length between perpendiculars, 470 ft; breadth, 60ft lO’/zin; depth moulded, 42ft Ilin; draught, 27ft 6in; deadweight, about 10,500 tons. The propelling power consists of two double-act-ing two-cycle compressorless Stork A. E. G. Hesselman motors developing 4200 h.p. each, and calculated to give a speed of 16 knots. The number of passengers which she can carry is 12, for whose comfort and convenience there is a promenade deck, dining saloon, and smoke room. During 1932 grain exports through the port of Vancouver totalled 104,700,471 bushels, compared with 70.696,935 bushels in 1931. Exports during the current crop year from August 1 to December 31 last totalled 46,796,079 bushels, compared with 20,620.303 bushels in the corresponding period of 1931. Grain accounted for 84 per cent, of Vancouver's ocean-borne export trade last year. The list of salvage awards by the Admiralty Court during 1932, compiled by the Liverpool Underwriters’ Association, contains 11 items, the total sum involved being £34,975, compared with 14 awards and £44,080 in 1931. The largest individual amount granted last year was £19,000 to the British tugs Lady Brassey. Lady Duncannon, Arcadia, Muria, Contest and Watercock; the Dutch tugs, Noordzee and Oostzee. and the German .Seefalke and Hermes, which, after five attempts, refloated and towed to Dover the American steamer Hybert, which had stranded on the Goodwins in November of the previous year. She was a vessel of 6501 tons gross, and with her general cargo she was valued at £71,057. The only other large award was one of £11.500 to the British steamer Ousebridge for towing to St. Michaels the Swedish motor-tanker Castor. 8714 tons gross, which caught fire and was abandoned 175 miles from the Azores in April, 1931. The Castor with her cargo of fuel oil was valued at £106,000, while the Ousebridge was on her way from Nicolaieff to Baltimore with a cargo of iron ore valued at £66,670. WITHIN WIRELESS RANGE.
