SPANISH RISING
SERIOUS DISORDERS DISSATISFACTION WITH GOVERNMENT COUP FRUSTRATED (United Press Assn.— Telegraph Copyright.) (Rec. 5.5 p.m.) Madrid, May 10. A general strike beginning at midnight and aiming at the overthrow of the Government, in conjunction with a rising of army chiefs, resulted in serious disorders throughout the country. During a collision between police and Reds at Madrid a woman produced a bomb from a basket and hurled it at the combatants, killing a policeman and a Red and wounding five,, including herself. The bomb exploded in a tramway depot. Six were killed and many wounded in fighting in the provinces. The strike failed in Barcelona, and was only partly successful in Madrid. The Government’s promptitude in arresting hundreds of suspects, including twelve staff officers, last night, prevented the staging of a coup d’etat. A later message states that 20 bomb explosions occurred in the course of the day. Electric cables and water mains were damaged. Many rioters were arrested.
