WOMEN’S INSTITUTE
WAIRIO BRANCH. ® (From Our Correspondent.) The monthly meeting of the Wairio Women’s Institute was held on Thursday last, Mrs Rollo presiding over a splendid attendance of members, friends and visitors. The meeting opened in the usual manner with the ode and creed, the motto being “Falling leaves are Nature’s sermons.” The roll call for the evening, “The place where I was born,” was very entertaining and amusing. The winners of the competition for the best plain oven scones were: Mrs Rollo first, Mrs Steans second, and Mrs Dodds third. The sugar bag competition was won by Mrs Rollo, and the flour bag competition by Mrs E. Dickson.
A song was sung during the evening by Miss Miller, who also was presented with a gift on the occasion of her departure from Wairio. Mrs Fordyce from Nightcaps was present, and gave a very interesting demonstration on the spinning of wool. Supper was served, the hostesses for the evening being Mesdames E. Dickson, White, Flynn and Miss E. Keen. A game, tearing an animal from paper, was won by Miss Mackay, and a charade completed the programme. The meeting closed in the usual way with the singing of the Women’s Institute anthem.
