AN EXCELLENT DISPLAY STANDARD MAINTAINED NUMEROUS ATTRACTIONS The Southland Agricultural and Pastoral Association’s 1933 Winter Show, which was officially opened in the Drill Hall yesterday by the Hon. A. F. Hawke, is a worthy complement of the association’s Summer Show. At the latter fixture is exhibited the magnificent stock for which Southland farmers are so justly renowned. It remains for the Winter Show to demonstrate the wealth of Southlands fodder crops, the quality of Southland’s dairy produce, the skill and industry of the wives of Southland farmers, and the sound practical knowledge of the boys and girls of Southland. Year by year the Winter Show has come to fill a more important place in the agricultural life of the province and the 1933 fixture well deserves to rank with the outstanding shows of 1931 and 1932. The entries almost equal last year’s record, the quality of the exhibits is not a whit inferior and the attractiveness of the comprehensive display is even greater. In addition to the many interesting sections of the Show proper are the exceptionally fine exhibits in the Garden Club’s Chrysanthemum Show and the Invercargill Poultry Club’s Show. Yesterday was Judging Day, the adjudicators having no easy task in reaching decisions, so keen was the competition in most classes. The attendance, both afternoon and evening, was so satisfactory that a record gathering is anticipated to-day, People’s Day. At both afternoon and evening sessions today and to-morrow special attractions have been arranged for the entertainment of visitors.
