GOLD HOARDING
PEASANTS IN HOLLAND. EXPORT MAY BE BANNED. (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright.) (Rec. 7 p.m.) London, May 9. The City editor of the Daily Express says that world-wide gold hoarding is gaining momentum. Peasants in Holland are purchasing gold over the bank counter like cheese. To check speculation the Dutch banks put a ban on forward dealings in guilders except for trade transactions. _ Many speculators believe that Holland will be forced off gold, though bank notes are covered by gold to the extent of 90 per cent, and almost every debt entered into with Holland is specifically stated to be on a gold basis. On the contrary trade between Holland and her East Indies colonies has been heavily hit by the fall in commodity prices, and the Hitler regime has caused the suspension of practically all Dutch exports to Germany.
