STAR OF SOUTHLAND, No. 14. The fortnightly meeting of the Star of Southland Lodge, No. 14, was held on Saturday evening, W.M. Bro. E. Perkins being in the chair. Two members were initiated, two were balloted for and one was proposed for membership into the lodge. . Wor. Bro. G. J. Hughes, made a presentation of a “Director of Ceremony’s Wand” on behalf of Wor. Bro. Sutherland, Grand Trustee to the lodge. The wand was made of cedar out of a piece of furniture belonging to the first resident judge in Dunedin. The question of unemployed members’ children in the Juvenile Lodge came up for discussion, and it was resolved to allow them in at half rates of contributions. Bro. Hughes, who was delegate to the bi-annual conference held in Wanganui, gave his report. The main remits passed were the granting of sick pay of £1 a week for 52 weeks and the relief of aged members’ widows. The challenge shield was again won by the Star of Southland Lodge, and before the close of the session the W.G.M., Bro. J. Harvey, presented it to Bro. Hughes. An invitation was extended to the Grand Council to hold its next session in Christchurch. This was accepted. The balance-sheet of the New Zealand Grand Council showed a substantial increase on the two years’ working. The total assets were close on the £50,000 mark. The Federal bal-ance-sheet showed the assets to be over £1,000,000. This was very gratifying to the members. The numerical strength of the society this year showed a small decrease in numbers. It was stated that the Star of Southland Lodge was to be congratulated on the progress it had made during the last two years. Wor. Bro. Wallace moved a hearty vote of thanks to Bro. Hughes for his comprehensive report of the proceedings, which was carried by acclamation. . > • In the general business of the lodge the matter of holding a Past Masters’ night was suggested. The outline given was to hand the business of the lodge over to the Past Masters for the. night as an instruction to the lodge on the inner workings of the society. Ibis was agreed to and the next meeting was chosen for Past Masters’ night. COURT SOUTHERN’S PRIDE.
