GORGE ROAD NOTES

FOOTBALL AND HOCKEY. (From Our Correspondent.) Although wintry conditions prevailed throughout the week, the recreation ground was in perfect order for the hockey and football matches on Saturday. A cold northerly wind was blowing across the field. There was a large attendance of the public. The hockey teams, Oteramika and Gorge Road, played first and the game was very evenly contested for most of the time, both sides missing the goal by the narrowest of margins. Oteramika won by four goals to two. The following scored for Oteramika: P. Hill (2), M. Nicol (1), D. Kelly (1), and for Gorge Road V. Millard and R. Kevern scored. Mr E. Monteith was the referee. The football match between Oteramika and Gorge Road proved to be the hardest contested game seen on the local grounds this season. Neither team had been beaten in the competition so both had their reputations to uphold and the final score of 3—all was a fairly true indication of the strength of the teams. Gorge Road packing a 3-4-1 scrum against their opponents’ 3-2-3, managed to hook the ball more frequently, but failed to take full advantage of their opportunities. The Oteramika forwards were breaking from the scrum very fast at times and smothering the Gorge Road backs. Up till half-time no score had resulted, but

shortly after resuming R. White (Oteramika) broke through some weak tackling to score a try, which was not converted. J. Shaw was penalized for handling in a ruck and W. Johnston evened the scores with a good kick. Mr K. McKenzie was the referee. General. On Wednesday, May 3, Mr P. L. Davies, the well-known Australian and New Zealand entertainer, gave an enjoyable concert in the hall, but owing to the short notice given to the public there was not as large an audience as there might have been. _ Mr Davies kept the audience entertained for two hours without a dull moment. The concluding item was a facial competition among the boys and girls and resulted, Ella McCallum 1; boys, Stanley Earston 1. Although the weather from a shooter’s point of view was anything but good, most of the local enthusiasts got their share. The party on the Horseshoe Lagoon obtained the limit on the first day, while the one on the “Black” also did fairly well. The smaller lagoons out towards Waituna Lake did not yield as many as usual owing, no doubt, to the amount of surface water lying about. The creek and part of Mr G. Stewart’s and Mr L. A. Niederer's property through which it flows have bden gazetted as a sanctuary and at present Is protecting large quantities of ducks.
