SUPREME COURT

LIGHT CRIMINAL CALENDAR. HIS HONOUR’S REMARKS. “I am glad to be able to tell you that your labours to-day will be slight,” said his Honour Mr Justice Kennedy in prefacing his charge to the Grand Jury at the quarterly criminal session of the Supreme Court which commenced yesterday. “There is every evidence since the last criminal sitting held in this city that there has been little serious crime within the district,” he continued. “No prisoners are awaiting sentence and only one indictment will be preferred against an accused person. The crime is not a serious one and might, with the consent of the accused person, well have been dealt with in the Lower Court. The charge is against a man named Bogue who, the prosecution alleges, carried on the business or occupation of a bookmaker. Evidence will be laid before you that two years ago at a country race meeting the accused was observed and was warned. There will be further evidence that at another meeting later he was again under observation and as the result of what was observed he was approached by two detectives. If, then, the evidence before you be that they accused the person observed of carrying on the business of a bookmaker and if there be further evidence that such person admitted the offence and promised to cease his activities if no further action was taken, there is ample evidence warranting you in finding a true bill.” His Honour concluded his charge by outlining the functions of the Grand Jury. After a short retirement, a true bill was found against the accused, Frederick Joseph Bogue, of Wyndham, by the Grand Jury, which was empanelled as follows: John Bertram Reid (foreman), Leslie Bertram Hutton, John Harold Bocock, Hugh Crawford, Hugh Carswell, John Murdock McNaughton, John Alexander Cardno, Basil Herbert Ayling, Alan Charles Ford, Arthur Valentine Poole, James Mowat Davies, John Bruce Thompson Alexander Glass, Denniston"' Cuthbertson, William Leonard Wyber, John William Smith, James Fraser Hurst Alexander, John Smith, Norman Aylmer Brodrick, William Harley Boyes, Ralph Mclnnes, John Alexander Lyon and Walter D’Arcy Palmer.
