MINING DISPUTE

AN AGREEMENT REACHED. WITHDRAWAL OF NOTICE. (Per United Press Association.) Auckland, May 8. The terms of the settlement under which it is expected the men in the four Waikato coalmines, which have been idle since April 18, will return to work were agreed to to-day. at a conference between representatives of the mining companies and the miners. The settlement is based upon an undertaking by the Renown Collieries, Limited, to withdraw the notice which it posted in April, proposing to postpone the payment of 20 per cent, of the wages due to its men during the continuance of the coal price “war.” Following this the men in the Renown mine ceased work, and those in the mines of the Taupiri and Glen Afton Companies did the same, in sympathy. The Pukemiro and Wilton mines continued working. The following resolution was adopted by all the parties represented: (1) That it is agreed that the Renown Company will at once withdraw its notice, so that the mines will be open l for work under the present agreement on Wednesday. (2) That the chairman will call a meeting of onwers, to be held not later than May 11, to consider trading conditions.

(3) That in future the Renown Company undertakes to give 14 days’ notice to its miners of any proposed stoppage. The agreement made at the conference will be submitted to the miners at a series of meetings, when a . decision will be made whether work is to be resumed on Wednesday.
