SWIMMING

PRIMARY SCHOOLS WILSON CUP WON BY MIDDLE SOUTH RUNNERS-UP As was anticipated the 1933 primary school swimming championships held at the Municipal Baths on Saturday night proved to be the most successful ever held. Twelve records were broken and one equalled, and there was a record attendance of parents and friends present to watch the great performances put up by the children throughout the evening. Outstanding performances — apart from the new records—were given by the Waihopai School juniors, who gained 42 out of the 49 points for their school, and Middle School seniors, who registered 41 points out of the total of 60. South put up a great display in both senior and junior sections, and St. Catherine’s made a great effort in their initial events. Individual performances of importance were those of J. Macdonald (Middle School) who only learnt to swim in the October classes last year; M. Gulliver (South), who won the primary school girls’ championship, knocking nearly 17sec off the 50yds record; and B. Springford (Middle), who gained four firsts and by his great consistency not only won the boys’ championship, but was mainly responsible for his school winning the cup. The swimming of C. Lynch (St. Catherine’s), M. Day (Waikiwi), R. Mac Gibbon (Waihopai), and the youngest competitor, A. Fitzsimmons (North), must have been very pleasing to their respective schools. A noticeable absentee was that fine girl swimmer N. Wilson (St. George).

Owing to the large number of entries —which were easily a record —it was deemed advisable to postpone the National Mutual Challenge Shield contest, and this is expected to be competed for on Wednesday afternoon. Those responsible for putting through the 39 events—including heats—in the record time of two and a-quarter hours, allowing children to be home early were: Mr A. J. Kingsland (starter), Messrs H. Aitken, A. Kidd and F. Springford (swimming judges), E. J. Salisbury and M. Hunt (diving judges), E. R. Fitzsimmons, N. Kidd and E. J. Salisbury (timekeepers), L. Foster (announcer), D. Deacon and H.
