SHIP’S PURSER
THEFT OF MONEY. ADMITTED TO PROBATION. (Per United Press Association.) Wellington, April 22. Frederick Spencer Hamlin, aged 28, who for the last six months has been attached to the Maori as purser, pleaded guilty in the Magistrate’s Court today to a charge of stealing sums of money totalling £5B 15/-, the property of the Union Company. He was admitted to probation for two years and ordered to make restitution.
It was stated by the police that accused’s duties had involved the collection and handling of money on behalf of the company and on two occasions he had converted money to his own use. On one occasion he had gone to the races and had lost the lot. When approached by the police he had frankly admitted the offence.
