ROBBER SHOT

HOLD-UP AT BANK

PEPPER THROWN AT TELLER

UNIDENTIFIED MAN

DEAD

(United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright.) (Rec. 6.30 p.m.) Melbourne, April 23. Entering the Carlton branch of the English, Scottish and Australian Bank just before mid-day on Saturday a man threw pepper in the eyes of the teller, Frewin, and seized a pile of notes.

A ledgerkeeper, Hayes, noticed the action and drew a pistol and shot the robber in the chest. The latter fell back and the notes were scattered. He rushed to the door where Mrs O’Halloran, who had heard the shot, attempted to stop him. He punched her and made off, but collapsed in a nearby lane. He was taken to hospital and died in a few minutes, having refused to give his name. The teller's eyes were badly injured. The notes were recovered.
