FIERCE BLAZE
FACTORY DESTROYED. HEAVY DAMAGE SUSTAINED. (Per United Press Association.) Christchurch, April 21. Damage estimated at £lO,OOO was caused by a fire which gutted the bacon department of the Canterbury Frozen Meat Company’s factory at Belfast early this morning. The brigade had a hard fight to save the other departments. Raging fiercely for over three hours the fire made a clean sweep of the centre block of the factory buildings, reducing the bacon curing, packing and drying rooms to ruins. The bacon chiller and beef chiller were also destroyed. The volunteer brigade at the factory and the brigade from the Central Station at Christchurch combined forces in a strenuous fight and although nothin" could be done to save the bacon factory they were successful in preventing the fire spreading to the other departments which were menaced. The insurances on the building will cover the loss. The origin is unknown. The night watchman visited the block at 2.35 a.m. and all was then in order but 20 minutes later flames were observed in the roof.
