UNEMPLOYMENT
THE GORE COMMITTEE. A meeting of the Gore Unemployment Committee held on Thursday evening was attended by Messrs W. D. Shelton (Chairman), A. T. Newman, G. Whittingham, F. M. Murray, Joseph Hunter and the Rev. H. C. Orchard. The secretary advised that up till the present no reply had been received from the Employment Board in regard to the scheme for the destruction of rabbits drawn up by Messrs W. D. Shelton and F. M. Murray. The secretary was instructed to write to the board inquiring about the matter. The secretary reported that as the result of representations made to the Bank of New Zealand by Mr Whittingham on behalf of the Southland County Council, arrangements had been made for the payment of the men’s wages on Saturdays. This was a great improvement on the old arrangement and was much appreciated by the men. It was decided to forward letters of thanks to Mr Whittingham and to the manager of the Bank of New Zealand. A circular from the board stated that there appeared to be a general impression that the eradication of ragwort by relief labour was to cease on December 31 last. Such was not the case. The circular issued in this connection provided for an intensified effort during the period when it was considered that this work could be most effectively carried out. Ragwort eradication could still be carried out under Schemes 4A and 5. Single men in camps could, at the discretion of the employing authority be employed on such work which might be available within a reasonable distance of the camp.—Received.
