HEAVY RAIN
RIVERS IN FLOOD HOKITIKA STREETS INUNDATED FATALITY REPORTED (Per United Press Association.) Greymouth, January 31. Heavy rain flooded all the West Coast streams and the Grey River to-night was within five feet of the wharf level and may rise higher. The Hokitika River is in high flood this evening, after heavy inland rainfall. The Hokitika streets were inundated, also an area alongside the banks at Kanieri. There were numerous slips on the coast road between here and Westport, but cars got through to-day. There were some stock losses in the Grey Valley. The Inangahua River flooded the road from Greymouth to Runanga. The Grey Valley, also southwards and to Otira, are to-night reported impassable in places on the Otira road. There was a fatality in a flooded creek. Charles Murtha, aged .67, of Kumera, fell on a stone, fracturing h ; s skull, when trying to push a motor cnthrough the water.
