A cablegram from London received at 2 o’clock this morning announces the death of Mr John Galsworthy, the author, aged 65 years.

Mr Haslan, of the Department of Education, was a passenger to Invercargill by last evening’s express and is a guest at the Grand Hotel. A London cablegram announces that the Prince of Wales is temporarily restricting his travels to the British Isles until conditions generally improve. At the request of a deputation yesterday the Mayor of Dunedin, Mr R. S. Black, consented again to contest the Mayoralty at the forthcoming election. Press Association message. ■ A Sydney cablegram reports that Dr W. F. Matthews has been appointed manager of the Australian Rugby Union Team to visit South Africa, leaving Sydney on April 25. A Toronto Press Association cablegram announces the death of the Rev. Samuel D. Chown, D.D., former general superintendent of the Methodist Church in Canada, at the age of 80 years.

The death occurred yesterday at Brighton, nqjir Dunedin, of Mr Malcolm Stevenson, aged 64. Deceased was a native of Otokia and a wellknown carting contractor. For many years he was a member and chairman of the Otago Hospital Board in 1908-9; a member of the Taieri County Council in 1904 and since 1929 a member of the Dunedin Unemployment _ Committee and did much organization work in connection with relief works. —Press Association.

Brown, Alma Crowe, Helen E. Cormack, David G. Hudson, James A. Johnston, Moira E. Nixon, Florence M. Rewcastle, Russell W. A. Reid.

The death occurred at McNab on Monday of Mrs J. Matthews, widow of Mr Robert Matthews, and a wellknown resident of Gore for many years. The late Mrs Matthews was the youngest daughter of the late Mr and Mrs Felix O’Neill, of County Derry, and was bom in Ireland 71 years ago. She received her education in her native town, and came to New Zealand with other members of the family when about 16 years of age. In 1882 she married Mr Matthews, who had settled at Charlton a year previously. The couple resided at Waimumu and Charlton till the year 1910, when they retired to Gore. Mr Matthews died in February, 1928. The deceased is survived by a family of five —Mrs D. Telfer (McNab), Mrs YV. Y. Cunningham (Benio), Mr A. Matthews (Gore), Mr J. N. Matthews (Mandeville) and Mr R. H. Matthews (Riversdale).
