COUNTY AFFAIRS

YESTERDAY’S MEETING.. FORMATION OF DRAINAGE DISTRICTS. The monthly meeting of the Southland County Council held yesterday morning was attended by Councillors W. N. Norman (Chairman), C. Robertson, G. Whittingham, L. A. Niederer, G. Wraytt, T. Golden, F. Trapski, J. McNeill and A. S. McNaught.

A request from the Gore Unemployed Committee for a hood on the county lorry while it was being used for transporting men to and from work was supported by Councillor Whittingham, who said that all that was required was a tarpaulin stretched over a frame on the truck and the men were prepared to make the frame. Councillors Whittingham and Trapski were authorized to procure a tarpaulin and have the cover made.

The County Clerk reported that a petition signed by 31 ratepayers had been received from the Elies Road to Kennington district asking for the formation of a drainage district. Five of the signatures were doubtful, two being outside the area and three not on the valuation roll and as 27 signatures were required the petition was not in order. The matter was held over until the petition was placed in order. A similar petition signed by 69 ratepayers was received from the Winton railway to Elies Road district. As 67 of the signatures were verified the council decided that steps should be taken to create the proposed district into a special rating area. A request from the Riversdale and District Welfare League for traffic domes at the corners of Newcastle and Lincoln streets and Newcastle street and York road was referred to the member for the riding and the engineer with power to act. In a reply to a request from King Solomon Deep Lead Limited, for an improved road to the King Solomon mine, the council decided to advise the secretary of the company that an endeavour would be made to place men on the road under the No. 5 scheme, if any were available after all requirements for farm development work had been filled.
