PUBLIC HOSPITAL
NEW SUPERINTENDENT DR. L. C. McNICKLE APPOINTED 27 APPLICANTS Ministerial approval has been given to the appointment of Dr L. C. McNickle, 8.A., M.D., Ch.B, as medical superintendent of the Southland Hospital. Dr McNickle is at present assistant medical superintendent and medical registrar of the Wellington Hospital. He was successful out of 27 applicants for the position. A native of Otago, Dr McNickle entered Otago University with a junior university scholarship. He had a distinguished academic career, winning the Marjorie McCallum medal for first place in medicine out of 67 candidates and the Graduates’ Association’s medal for first place in clinical medicine. He gained the M.B. and Ch. B degrees in 1924 and the M.D. degree in 1929. In 1925 he was assistant to the Professor of Physiology at Otago University and helped to conduct the Dunedin hospital for tubercular out-patients during that year. In 1926 he was house physician and house surgeon at the Dunedin Hospital, and in 1927 and part of 1928 assistant medical officer at Porirua mental hospital, where he had the advantage of studying modern psychotherapeutic methods under Drs Hayes and Waters, who had then recently returned from England. Since 1928 he has been assistant medical superintendent at the Wellington Hospital, taking charge in the absence of the superintendent. Dr McNickle is 32 years of age, is married and has one son. He is the holder of an air pilot’s license. He is expected to take up his new position early in the New Year.
