GORE BRASS BAND

NEW CONDUCTOR. MR E. SMITH APPOINTED. Mr E. Smith (Brydone) has'been appointed to the position of conductor of the Gore Brass Band in Succession to Mr G. H.' Mitchell, who recently tendered his resignation. In resigning from the conductorship, Mr Mitchell, who assumed charge of the band a little over a year ago, stated that he had enjoyed his association with the band and he regretted that owing to business reasons he\would be unable to devote the necessary time to band matters. , Mr Smith, who has been appointed as Mr Mitchell's successor, has had ,a long and successful career, first as a bandsman and subsequently as a conductor. He was formerly one of the Dominion’s leading euphonium players, having won the New Zealand championships at Oamaru, Dimedin and Christchqrch. He was conductor of the old Mornington Band, which won at the 1904, 1905, 1907 and 1908 contests. He was conductor of the St. Kilda Band when it won the A grade contest in 1912, secured first in one of the test selections at the Auckland contest in 1914 and was second at Nelson in 1921. He was also for a time conductor of the Invercargill Regimental Band, and was solo judge at Wellington in 1922 and acted in a similar capacity at i Auckland.
