Seasonal greetings between Mr E. C. Levvey, S.M., and members of the Police Force were exchanged at the final sitting for the year of the City Police Court yesterday morning. Senior-Sergeant Packer said he wished to extend best wishes for a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to his Worship on behalf of the force and to thank his Worship for what he had done for all of them. “It has been a pleasure to be associated with them,” said his Worship, in reciprocating.

A greatly appreciated concert of violin and pianoforte music was given by a party of pupils from the Hoani Halbert School of Music at the Borstal Institution last evening. The idea of entertaining the boys of the institution was a happy one on the part of Messrs Gordon Reed and W. Aitchison who, during the evening, conducted some enthusiastic community singing. Master Oma Halbert, the boy violinist, delighted his hearers with his remarkable talents, and with Master Bobby Murray gave a pleasing duet. All of the soloists were in splendid form and were accorded enthusiastic receptions. At the conclusion of the entertainment Mr R. W. Arnold, acting superintendent, conveyed his thanks and those of the staff and the boys to Messrs Halbert, Reed and Aitchison for their kindness in providing such an enjoyable concert.

Invercargill’s special information bureau was opened in the Southern Cross Buildings, Esk street, yesterday afternoon. It is intended to keep the office open on Christmas Eve and from Wednesday to Saturday (inclusive) of next week, and as a rush of inquiries is anticipated the organizer (Miss McGill) makes an appeal for extra assistance over this period. Senior boys and young men experienced in clerical work are especially requested to give their aid. Any firms desirous of having assistance in either shop or office work are asked to communicate with the office. No charge will be made by the assistants for service given for a few hours daily or at intervals at the convenience of business firms. The object is for prospective clerks or shorthand-typists to get into contact with real conditions in shop or office. They will not interfere with present staffs, but, on the other hand, should relieve them of extra work during the busy season. Those who have already assisted have been able to put theoretical knowledge gained into practice by taking shorthand from dictation and typing, and doing the routine work of an office, in addition to which they have had the opportunity of doing business with various firms. Already donations of tables and chairs have been received at the bureau. The loan of a typewriter would be appreciated.
