WINTON NOTES

PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH. ANNUAL MEETING HELD. The annual business meeting of the Winton-Lochiel Presbyterian Church was held in the Winton Sunday School Hall, the Rev. A. G. Gardiner presiding over a large attendance of parishioners. The church balance-sheet was presented by the treasurer, Mr John Brown, and disclosed a satisfactory position. The annual report of the kirk session stated inter alia: “We desire humbly and gratefully to acknowledge God’s goodness for yet another year of opportunity. We are passing through difficult and trying times in the world at large, but the session gives thanks to God for the measure of success which in His goodness and mercy has been granted to us as a congregation. Our minister has just completed the first full year of his stewardship. His thorough and conscientious efforts, combined with untiring energy, and zeal in his work and his tactful leadership, has proved an inspiration to all who are associated with him in the work. During the year Mr R. Young on demit from Waikiwi congregation was inducted and welcomed as a member of the session. After mature consideration it has been decided to take s* :ns to fill a much needed want in having Lochiel district represented on our church court, and we are pleased to place on record that at an early date it will be consummated by the ordination and induction of Messrs A. R. J Forbes, G. R. Queale, G. Leddington, and W. Smith as deacons. The communion roll stands at 189, 11 being added by certificate and five by profession of faith, and several from the reserved roll. Five disjunction certificates were issued. There were 22 baptisms, four weddings, and 12 funerals. The communion of the Lord’s supper was dispensed three times during the year. The work among the young in the Bible classes, the Sunday schools, the Boys’ Brigade and Life Boys is being carried on cheerfully and efficiently. We record the loss through removal from the district of capable leaders in Miss Bessie Manson and Mr Ross Murray. The P.W.M.U. continues as a real live and effective organization, while the choirs speak for themselves and as for many years past, continue to lead the services of praise both at Winton and Lochiel. The session wishes to take this opportunity of thanking all who during the year, have assisted in the work, however, humbly or unostentatiously. The session notes with pleasure the fortnightly meeting for prayer and urges the supreme importance of this service. Notable successes have been achieved by Sunday school scholars, three at Lochiel and one at Winton, gaining the highest aggregate marks for Southland in the Assembly Sunday school examination, while one, Marion Chalmers, gained the Assembly medal for highest marks in the Dominion. In conclusion let us face the coming year with hopefulness, knowing that Christ’s love and faithfulness have never failed us but again and again have we evidences of His presence.” The reports of the many church organizations at Winton and Lochiel were presented by the responsible officials and all reported a year of progress. Mr J. W. Gunn moved the adoption of the reports, and the Rev. Mr Gardiner, in his remarks, expressed thanks to the congregation for their devotion and whole-hearted co-opera-tion. He paid a tribute to the work accomplished by former ministers and church officials and said that united as they were as a congregation they would enter the new year with continued efforts in the service of God. Bowls. On Friday evening, two rinks from the Northend Club, Invercargill, journeyed to Winton and played a friendly game with representatives of the Central Club. Fine weather conditions prevailed, and with the green in good order an enjoyable game resulted with the visitors running out the winners by a six-point margin. The results were as follows:

Both the Central and Winton Clubs are busy at present. The greens are in first class condition, although on the fast side, but they are being well patronized and star games as well as club fixtures are being keenly contested. On the Central green on Wednesday last a star match was played between F. Tilley and R. S. Balch (holders) and H. A. Pierce and J. Murphy (challengers), the latter pair winning on the last head, one up. On the Winton Club’s green a star match was also played on Wednesday evening, when the holders, O. Jamieson and J. T. Butler, withstood a challenge from P. Reynolds and J. Harvey.

A. AND P. ASSOCIATION. At a meeting of the committee of the Winton A. and P. Association on Saturday evening the president, Mr F Moore, presided over the following members: Messrs C. M. Lindsay, M. McKay, D. H. McLean, M. Kean, ITaser, P. A. de la Perrelle, J. McCallum, J. J. Blakie, W. Blakie. The president referred to the success of the society’s recent annual fixture and took the opportunity of thanking the committee and marshalls for the valuable assistance they had given. A special vote of thanks was recorded Mr Andrew Baird, Oreti, for his excellent services prior to and on the day of the show. It was decided to write to the various judges expressing the association’s appreciation of their services. It was decided on the motion of Messrs McKay and McLean that a hearty vote of thanks to Mr P. A. de la Perrelle, M.P., be recorded for his efforts in obtaining the grant of £l5O for the experimental area. It was suggested by Mr Lindsay that it may be preferable that in future entries for the several pony classes should close prior to the fixture. Mr McLean also put forward a suggestion that blackboards should be provided in the show ring for the information of the public in the various classes coming up for judging. These and other matters were noted for consideration at the annual meeting. An interim balance sheet was presented by the secretary, showing a debit on the recent fixture. This was principally accounted for by the. numerous classes provided and a falling off in subscriptions. As there were included in the expenditure side of the balance sheet a number of non-recurring items, such as the loading bank recently erected and other improvements the position must be considered satisfactory.
