PUKERAU NOTES

SCHOOL CONCERT. The annual school concert took place last Friday evening, the hall being filled to capacity. Mr Ivan Dripps, chairman of the School Committee, presided, and in the course of his introductory remarks stated that the funds were required to defray the costs o<, the school prizes. A lengthy programme of choruses and plays as well as elocutionary items was submitted to an appreciative audience, in a manner which reflected careful training on the part of the teachers, Mr Hoare and Miss Carter. Following is the list of items: Speech by Keith Haggart; Sea Shanties, senior scholars; recitation, Russell Styles; Nursery Rhymes, juniors; play, “The Dentist’s Den,” senior boys; Step dance, Winnie Voight; play, juniors; recitation, Douglas McDonald; song, juniors; reading, senior boys; dance, junior girls; play, juniors; mouth organ selections, senior boys; recitation, senior boys; character song, juniors; play, senior girls; song, Inez and Jean Hoare; recitation, James Bourke; play, seniors; song, junior girls; song, seniors; play, seniors. After supper had been served a dance was held to music supplied by local talent.

The annual congregational meeting of the Pukerau Parish was held on Monday evening last, there being an average attendance. The Rev. Nixon presided, and after the singing of the 100th Psalm followed by a Bible reading and prayer, the chairman expressed his pleasure at meeting the assembled members of the congregations of the parish. The church attendances during the year had kept up wonderfully well, a fact which added assistance and encouragement to the minister. He thanked the office-bearers of the church for their loyal support, and acknowledged the helpful services of the organist, and also the superintendent and teachers of the Sunday School, The session clerk in his report stated that four new members had been added to the communion roll during the year, making a total of 112. The Minister had conducted fortnightly services at the camp for relief workers near Waipahi during the winter and spring months with encouraging results. The class for young men which met. at the manse proved interesting and of an educative value to the 16 members who attended.

The treasurer in submitting the annual statement of receipts and expenditure, stated that the credit balance of £29 15/8 was due chiefly to a reduction in the expenses and to contributions of £7O and £lO from the Pukerau Ladies’ Guild and the Waipahi P.W.M.U. respectively; a grant of £lB 17/6 for church repairs also increased the year’s revenue appreciably. The report and balance-sheet and the reports of the session clerk and general secretary were duly adopted. The reports and balance-sheets of the Pukerau P.W.M.U. and Ladies’ Guild showing credit balances of 5/94 and £26 15/- respectively were read and adopted. The visiting ministers were the Rev. D. Herron, of Knox Church, Dunedin, and the Rev. McLachlan, of Waikaka Valley, who delivered appropriate and thoughtful addresses, The musical entertainment was provided by members of the Waikaka Valley Church choir as follows: Solos by Mrs H. Smith and Mr J. P. Thayer; organ recital, Mrs .T McPhail; recitation, Miss Smith. The accompaniments were played by Mrs Nixon and Mrs McPhail.
