BLUFF NOTES

LODGE MEETING. (From Our Correspondent.) Mr and Mrs P. Moffitt and family, Ocean Beach, left on Monday for a holiday at Oamaru. Mr R. Wylie, of “Bute,” Greenhills, returned at the week-end from a holtday spent in Dunedin. Mr J. Cameron, Lee street, returned from a visit to Dunedin on Monday. There was a good attendance at the latest fortnightly meeting of the R.A.0.8. Lodge. Primo C. W. Tonkinson presided. Amongst the chief business of the evening was the initiation of two candidates into the Order —a father and a son. This is regarded as a unique event; for although there are similarly related members in many other lodges,;, as well as the Buffalo, it must be rarely, if ever, that such a pair have been initiated at the same time. Details were finalized in connection with the annual Christmas tree for children of members which has been arranged for Saturday afternoon at half-psst two. During the evening Primo Tonkinson, on behalf of the lodge, made the presentation of a miniature prospecting outfit to Bro. H. Fincher. The gift carried with it the good wishes of the brethren, the speaker said, and it was intended to serve as a mascot in a proposed mining venture. Bro. Fincher suitably replied. During the hour devoted to harmony well-received items were rendered by the following: Bros. Harrison (piano solos), F. Belsham (accordeon solos), T. Fowler, W. A. Harris (songs), C. Hannan (mouth-organ solos), D. Parker (bagpipe selections), Primo Russell and Bro. H. Fincher (Jews harp duets), Bro. E. Campbell (saxophone sols). Euchre. There was the usual large attendance at the R.S.A. euchre tournament held on Saturday night in the Athenaeum Hall. Play passed off pleasantly under the supervision of Messrs T. Finnerty and W. Gilson. At an interval in the games Mr Finnerty announced that the present was the last tournament for the year and that the series would be renewe ' in the second week in January next. The speaker, on behalf of the R.S.A., thanked patrons for their continued support, which, he said, was greatly appreciated by the committee. He hoped the same support would be forthcoming in the future. He concluded by wishing all present the compliments of the season. Winners for the evening were: Mr I. Roderique 1, Mr A. Vincent 2, Mrs A. Tall and Mrs T. Roderique (equal) 3. The first round aggregate prize was won by Mr E. Murphy and the second by Mrs R. Kirkwood, while the consolation prize was awarded to Mr F. Vella. Athletic Club. The popularity of the Bluff Amateur Athletic Club’s sports meetings was again shown on Monday evening when a big crowd gathered to witness the latest outing. The weather was perfect and the meeting enjoyed to the full. The Bluff Pipe Band under PipeMajor C. Parker was in attendance and gave an excellent programme of musical numbers. A pleasing feature was the highland dancing of Miss Koa Haberfield, of Greenhills, whose cleverly executed items drew loud applause from the onlookers. Pipe-Major Parker supplied the accompaniments. Sweets scrambles as usual were popular items with the juveniles. The committee are deserving of great credit for the management of the meeting, as proceedings were kept going briskly from start to finish. Those responsible were: Messrs A. Moorehead (president), H. W. Campbell, A. E. Budd, L. Froude, T. Stewart, G. Giles, C. Denny, B. Hathaway, J. Lane. The work of the starter (Mr T. Stewart) was made considerably lighter by the co-operation of the competitors who in every case kept their marks well and obeyed instructions implicitly. Results were as follows:— 100 Yards Handicap: First heat, A. Bremer (Byds) 1, N. Metzger (syds) 2, F. Te Koiti 3; second heat, T. Heads (12yds), 1, G. Sutherland (11yds) 2, T. Pickering (scr.) 3. Final.—T. Heads 1, G. Sutherland 2, N. Metzger 3. A great finish, inches separating the placed men. 440 Yards Handicap: G. Sutherland (30yds) 1, T. Heads (21yds) and T. Pickering (scr) tie for second. Sutherland ran strongly to win by three yards from the dead-heaters. 880 Yards Handicap: J. Bremer (scr) 1, G. Sutherland (20yds) 2, T. Heads (15yds) 3. The winner ran a capital race. In the last lap a sustained sprint gave him victory with something to spare. Very little separated the other placed men who fought out a great finish. Young Ladies’ Race: Miss M. Hawke 1, Mrs B. Albertson 2, Miss M. Williams 3. Girls’ Race: I. Cross 1, N. Hardy 2, L. Anglem 3. Boys’ Race: W. Metzger 1, B. Budd 2, E. Hardy 3. Half-mile Bicycle Race: B. Gilroy 1, R. Duncan 2, L. Rayner 3. Duncan, the scratch man, made a determined effort to catch the youthful Gilroy, but the latter (a very promising rider) rode strongly to gain a very popular win. One Mile Bicycle Race: R. Duncan (scr) 1, B. Gilroy 2. The race resolved itself into a duel between the two first men, the rest of the field dropping out. Duncan rode a well-judged race and, though his opponent hung to him pluckily, had too much in reserve at the finish. Both riders were applauded for a fine contest. Relay Race: Greenhills (J. Haberfield, N. Metzger and J. Bremer) 1, ex-Tech-nical scholars 2, Bluff 3. Also started: Railway and Watersiders. The race created a lot of interest. The winners showed good form, their passing on being very good. The two other placed teams stuck to it well and were not disgraced.
