HOKONUI RIDING MR G. W. WHITTINGHAM RETURNED DETAILS OF VOTING The Southland County Council byelection for the vacancy on the council caused through the death of Mr Erskine Bowmar, who represented the Hokonui Riding, was held yesterday and resulted in the return of Mr G. W. Whittingham, of Gore. The polling resulted:— G. W. Whittingham (Gore) 327 David Dickie (Gore) 265 Thomas McMath (Riversdale) 164 Some 45 declaratory votes are still to be counted, but Mr Whittingham’s election is already assured. The following booths, nine in number, opened at 9 a.m. and closed at 6 p.m. An hour later the returning officer (Mr A. J. Service) announced the result of the voting. There were 604 ratepayers on the roll, but since the voting qualification was proportional to the property held, 757 (excluding the declaratory votes) went to the ballot box.
