SOUND BATTING

ENGLAND 341 FOR 5 I ■ OPENING PAIR SCORE OVER 200 LEYLAND BRILLIANT (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright.) (Rec. 7.5 p.m.) Adelaide, November 4. The weather was fine and the wicket easy for the commencement of the cricket match between England and South Australia. Verity was included in the English team. Jardine won the toss and decided to bat. Three thousand were present when play began. The crowd later swelled to 10,000. The wicket and weather were conducive to run-getting. It was early apparent that Sutcliffe was not in a scoring mood. He simply dug in, taking three-quarters of an hour to get double figures. Leyland was the direct opposite. He played artistic, wristy on shots and scored 50 in 75 minutes. The Yorkshireman had complete command of the bowling. Grimmett was used sparingly. When 93 Leyland gave a hot chance which was not taken by Jamieson, the bowler. The first century was hoisted in 142 minutes and included 13 fours. Sutcliffe was still restrained, showing sound defence. His partner scored freely all round. The indications are that these two will be England’s opening batsmen. There was much power behind Leyland’s strokes. Two hundred was posted in 184 minutes and the batsmen were well set at the tea adjournment when the score stood at 219. The opening partnership was broken in the first over after tea when Leyland hit the last ball of Grimmett’s over straight to Nitschke at point. His display was a masterpiece of correct placements and timing. He batted 196 minutes and hit 14 fours. Pataudi had a short reign. He patted Grimmett to short leg and attempted a hopeless run. Sutcliffe remained stationary and Nitschke by a quick return, found Pataudi out of his crease before he had scored. Sutcliffe reached the century in 214 minutes. Partnered with Hammond he became more aggressive and ran to 148 with two successive leg-side sixers off Jamieson. Sutcliffe’s dashing innings terminated when he attempted to hit Grimmett to the leg side. The ball flew high to Nitschke, who secured an easy catch. Sutcliffe played a superlative innings lasting 259 minutes. He hit 13 fours and two sixers. Jamieson, who had been hard-work-ed, was rewarded by catching Ames off his own bowling for 10. Jardine joined Hammond at four for 327. Incessant barracking followed the captain’s strokes. Hammond reached 27 in 73 minutes. Confidently stepping out to Grimmett he missed and Walker whipped off his bails. Scores:— ENGLAND. First Innings.
