' FINANCE AND TRADE

LOCAL MARKETS. * Times Office, Friday morning. Grain and Produce. Oats; —Business is inclined to be dull. There are no offerings from farmers, and the shipping demand at present is not keen. Most of the oats which remain in store are undergrades and occasional lines of these are being shipped to the North Island. Prices to farmers are nominally. 2/8 per bushel for A grade, 2/6 for B grade and 2/3 for good undergrades. Wheat.—Business is practically confined to the supply of wheat for local fowl feed requirements. There are no offerings from fanners. Any milling lines are readily saleable at the fixed f.q.b. prices while good whole fowl wheat lines are worth 2/1 per bushel, on trucks, country stations. Chaff.—There is no shipping demand and offerings from farmers are more than sufficient to satisfy the limited local demand. Values to farmers for good bright quality are £3 per ton, on truck, country stations. This is the only quality in demand. Ryegrass.—Stocks are exceedingly light and practically all of them will be required to satisfy the local seed demand. It is reported that sales of heavy-weight dressed seed of good germination have been made for shipment at up to 5/10 per bushel, f.o.b. There are no offerings from farmers. Potatoes. —As it is now getting rather late for shipping merchants are not evincing much interest in the potato market. Probably from now on business will be limited to satisfying the local demand. There are still a number of lines offering from the country but for these merchants do not feel disposed to offer more than £4 per ton, on trucks country stations. Fruit and Vegetables. Fruit of all kinds is at present rather scarce. Apples are now finished and there are only a few lines coming to hand with very little of first quality included. Oranges are almost exhausted and a further supply of navels and Valencias ex the Wainui, on Tuesday next, is being eagerly awaited. Bananas, both Samoan and Niue, arrived during the week and met with a keen demand, prices being much better than usual. There tire still a few New Zealand lemons making their appearance on the market. These are of good average condition and prices are slightly lower than those obtained for the last consignments. Australian lemons are still on the market. Tomatoes are more plentiful and prices are lower than last week. The supply next week, however, will be smaller on account of New Zealand Cup Week at Christchurch. With regard to. stone and jam fruits there is every indication of an early season being experienced and, provided there are no late frosts, it should prove a successful one for growers. Vegetables are coming on to the market in much smaller quantities than before and consequently prices are fairly high. Cauliflowers and rhubarb particularly are scarce, but there are now more lettuce'about. The first consignment of green peas from Nelson is expected to reach Invercargill on Tuesday next. Current prices realized at auction during the week are approximately as follows: Apples, Delicious 10/- to 14/-, Sturmers 7/6 to 12/-, according to quality, coloured dessert 10/- to 12/6, Wolseleys 8/- to 9/6, cookers 7/-; oranges 15/- to 20/-; bananas 19/6 to 27/6; lemons 14/- to 17/-; pears 5/- to 5/6;

Wheat Meal—2s’s £l5 7/- per ton. THE STOCK MARKET. There were larger entries in both the fat sheep and fat cattle sections at Lorneville on Tuesday last, when values for fat sheep again showed a falling tendency. The quality of the fat sheep, taken all over, was fairly good, and prices at the commencement of the sale were on a par with those ruling last week, but, as the sale progressed, prices eased, and towards the finish passings were very frequent. There was a large yarding of good quality fat lambs forward and at the commencement of the sale it appeared as though prices would be very low, but the demand was quite good right throughout, with the result that satisfactory sales were made. The quality of the fat cattle was also fairly good, consisting chiefly of good prime bullocks and heifers. Owing to one, or two outside buyers operating, prices remained firm at last week’s rates. Very little interest was taken in the store cattle section with the result that only a few lots changed hands. Good dairy cows are still in demand, and satisfactory sales were made for these. The entry of store sheep comprised two pens of ewes and lambs of fair quality, these being disposed of at 4/and 4/11, all counted. The following is a range of prices ruling at Lorneville at the present time. Fat Cattle.—Extra prime bullocks £8 10/- to £9 10/-; good quality medium weights £6 10/- to £8; lighter sorts £4 10/- to £5 10/-; good heifers £5 to £6 17/6; prime quality £3 5/- to £4 15/-; good quality cows £4 10/- to £5 10/-; medium weights £3 to £4 5/-; poorer sorts down to £2.
