BANK ROBBERY
SUM OF £3209 TAKEN AN ARREST MADE. (Per United Press Association.) Auckland, November 3. The premises of the Newmarket branch of the National Bank of New Zealand in Broadway were entered on Wednesday night and over £3200 was stolen from the bank safe. The burglary was discovered this morning and was immediately reported to the police. Detectives were engaged on the case throughout the day and at 7 o’clock this evening an arrest was made. When members of the bank staff arrived at the branch this morning, there was no sign of the door having been forced. However, when the safe was opened it was found that the money placed there on Wednesday night was missing. There was no way of ascertaining how the safe had been opened. At 7 o’clock this evening Norman Gload Smith, bank clerk, was arrested by Detective Hunt on a charge of breaking and entering the premises of the National Bank of New Zealand at Newmarket and theft. He will appear at the police court in the morning. It is understood the whole of the stolen money has been recovered.
